Week of July 5, 2021

Welcome to my weekly letter, where I share a few noteworthy articles and my own commentary. Without further ado…

Weekly Read

  • NASA’s MOXIE Experiment Is Making Oxygen on Mars (Wired) – MOXIE is our new friend on Mars! It eats carbon dioxide and turns it into oxygen!  At the time of the article (May 20th) the process was planned to be tested, but our other friend on Mars later on reported success (see next post!).  Does that mean we can use it on the Moon or even on Earth now?
  • A tweet from Mars (NASA’s Perseverance Mars Rover) – “Extracted oxygen from atmosphere,” checked, on June 1st.  This is how I found out that MOXIE was a success, on the same day I found out Perseverance rover has a twitter account.  Soon the Ingenuity helicopter probably will have one, and then they will be battling over the title of Martian social influencer, maybe even against the Chinese rover/helicopters over Weibo…
  • How Do You Make a Robot Walk on Mars? It’s a Steep Challenge (Wired) – when I was reading this I was wondering if alternative designs like this common kids toy (no affiliation…) would work better than actual legs, but I am sure I am missing the science behind it.  It does look like we may soon get the ‘Tachikoma‘! 🙂
  • We Asked Giant-Robot Experts to Critique Video Game Mecha (Wired) – just ignore this party-pooper article, all its sound scientific and logical explanations, and go build a fully functional Gundam already!  Joking aside, the linked giant robot duel video actually is really cool, so do check that out.
  • Google claims it is using A.I. to design chips faster than humans (CNBC) – what else can humans do again?  Oh, right, look at the picture in the article, we can service those systems where A.I. resides, and make sure they are comfortable, and productive… My life’s dream is finally fulfilled.

That’s it for this week! Have a nice weekend!
