Welcome to my weekly letter, where I share a few noteworthy articles and my own commentary. Without further ado…
Weekly Read
- This small startup helps Microsoft sidestep the App Store with its new cloud gaming service (Protocol) – an interesting story about how a small startup, Rainway, struggled to monetize their product, and eventually found the right product-market fit with the licensing model for the established players. It not only helped Microsoft solved the problem getting onto iOS devices, I am sure it also has something to do with the ambition revealed in Microsoft’s latest announcement
- What is algorithmic culture? (Ferment AI) – it’s a lyrical read about how algorithms are driving our world now and how, if we continue our over reliance and it may eventually destroy us, starting with our creativity and serendipity… Perhaps we can ask Neo when Matrix 4 comes out. 😉
- The Power and Pitfalls of Gamification (Wired) – similar to anything in life, it’s best to consume in moderation. In other words, gamification won’t solve anything if not applied with a thoughtful setup and the right audience mix.
- Tech Companies Don’t Need to Be Creepy to Make Money (Wired) – the subject here is DuckDuckGo but there are also other more recent examples that are very relevant, e.g. ex-googler founded search company, Neeva. Even the ongoing Apple vs Facebook feud exposes dramatic different stances on the way big tech companies handle privacy. Some are obviously reluctant to move to a less creepy, better privacy-focused model to run business.
- Why the Hybrid Workforce of the Future Depends on the ‘Geriatric Millennial’ (Index – Medium) – I learned that I am a [old] Geriatric Millennial… but, for all the strength pointed out in this well written piece, and for my self-flattering purpose… whatever it says. 😀
Have a nice weekend!
