Happy *flat* earth day!
Welcome to my weekly letter, where I share a few noteworthy articles and my own commentary. Without further ado…
Weekly Read
- In Europe, Backlash Heats Up Over Garbage Incinerators (Wired) – it’s recognized that incinerators produce toxins that are not good for humans nor the environment, yet the basis of the concern for not using them rooted in the volume of trash that would overwhelm the landfill. It is time to curb the use of plastic, incentivize composting, and encourage the overall trash reduction… save our earth!
- ‘Blue Carbon’ Credits Could Help Restore Ecosystems (Wired) – blue carbon is the decarbonization via coastal ecosystems, and it is good to know there are more and more carbon offsetting channels being researched and developed. But the key is getting the balance to ensure setting the right pricing, and to mandate companies and nations to decarbonize first before turning to offsetting. This article from Vox provides more context on carbon offsetting.
- Companies using 3D printing to build houses at ‘half the time for half the price’ (Today) – seems like an awesome idea! One of the major distinctions between houses in Asia (where I was raised) and in US is that US houses are built with lumber instead of cement. (imagine the culture shock when I learned of this!) I am hopeful that these 3D-printed cement homes will become the disruptor to help address the housing shortage.
- NASA’s Ingenuity helicopter makes maiden flight on Mars in a “Wright brothers moment” (CBS News) – This is an obligatory follow-up to my post in February, when Perseverance along with two other Mars missions successfully arrived after their nearly seven months travel from Earth. We are now flying drones in our neighbor’s turf 🙂
Have a nice weekend!
