Welcome to my weekly letter, where I share a few noteworthy articles and my own commentary. Without further ado…
Weekly Read
- Covid Forced America to Make More Stuff. What Happens Now? (Wired) – given the history of how US produced and made stuffs through the World Wars and became the world’s super power, this story illustrated a clear contrast with the current state of domestic production, set back by allowing other countries, including China, to take the role of ‘the world’s factory’ for so long.
- Team behind one of Roblox’s biggest games starts a studio (Polygon) – even though I had previously shared my doubt about Roblox’s mission delivering a ‘metaverse’ I must still say that it is truly an incredible platform with thoughtful and feature-rich game creation tool, Roblox Studio. This story is a good example showcasing how it’s able to incubate a game studio out of its talented (and gen-Z young) player pool.
- A New Brain Implant Translates Thoughts of Writing Into Text (Wired) – 90 characters per minute is pretty decent I would say! Pretty soon we can code with it and hopefully not ever need our real fingers anymore (goodbye carpal tunnel problems!) and imagine playing Flight of the Bumblebee, or just Guitar Hero with your mind?
- Keith Haring on Creativity, Empathy, and What Makes Us Who We Are (BrainPickings) – Coincidentally I purchased Keith Haring’s art book a few months before reading this blog issue. And that only amplified how much this writing resonates with me: “We make art with everything we are, the doom and the glory of it. We make art to know ourselves, to locate ourselves in the web of being, to make ourselves more alive. We make art that, at its best, helps other people locate themselves and live.“
- The Psychology of Why Fan Art Is So Delightful (Wired) – fan art is art too. Let’s just get that out of the way 🙂 Now that we know there’s also psychological benefits to making them, no need to shy away from making more!
That’s it for this week! Have a nice weekend!
