Week of April 19, 2021

Welcome to my weekly letter, where I share a few noteworthy articles and my own commentary. Without further ado…

Weekly Read

  1. Interview: Patrick Collison, co-founder and CEO of Stripe (noahpinion.substack.com) – the interview touches on so many different areas: role of government (policy and funding), talent allocation, the role of war to speed of innovation…etc. But the most interesting to me is the topic of ‘Progress Studies’ (or the perception of progress slowing down, comparing to the 50’s and 60’s)
  2. The Devastating Decline of a Brilliant Young Coder (Wired) – since this article talks about the misfortune of a cofounder of a hugely successful company, Cloudflare, I was thinking it might go the way of Tony Hsieh. I was very wrong – turned out to be a neurodegenerative disease “frontotemporal dementia”
  3. Revenge Of The Winklevii (Forbes) – potential material for a sequel of ‘The Social Network‘? 😉 It’s a pretty impressive story that after the Facebook debacle they went on to compete in 2008 Beijing Olympic, earned MBAs at Oxford, then started their venture capital, which led to Gemini and now the billionaire status… Another notable mention is the idea of building a new social network on the decentralized blockchain techonology. Seemingly a natural extension to Microsoft’s idea on decentralized identity.
  4. AI Could Enable ‘Swarm Warfare’ for Tomorrow’s Fighter Jets (Wired) – while it is indeed a primary usage since the tech is developed by DARPA, ‘warfare’ is not necessary the only impactful usage (the article also mentioned the use of mapping and inspecting an area collaboratively… maybe super useful for search and rescue mission… or surveying sudden environmental change) so the attention grabbing title may be a bit too scary for the AI-hesitant population, rendering a marketing problem for AI in general.

Have a nice weekend!
