Week of March 22, 2021

Welcome to my weekly letter, where I share a few noteworthy articles and my own commentary. Without further ado…

Weekly Read

  1. Apple CEO Tim Cook Expects a Post-Pandemic Return to the Office: ‘I Can’t Wait’ (people.com) – “Innovation isn’t always a planned activity… It’s bumping into each other over the course of the day and advancing an idea that you just had” These are very insightful words that help explain why companies and leaders are still not comfortable with the idea of fully remote teams.  An alternative solution maybe… ChatRoulette for Enterprise/Teams? 😀
  2. Good-Bye Zoom. Hello Low-Key Ambient Snooping (Wired) – Echoing from Mr Cook’s statement above, many teams have been trying various creative solutions to get that workplace ‘Serendipity’ (and probably also their innovations?). A few ideas mentioned: Teamflow, Gather.town (see below), and even… Read Dead Redemption 2! (again, ChatRoulette is missing out big time on this opportunity :D)
  3. A Mission to Make Virtual Parties Actually Fun (Wired) – This is actually from November last year. But the last two articles remind me of gather.town. I think not everyone is walking around the virtual office with ‘WASD’ though.
  4. What I Work on (paulgraham.com) – Unrelated to the above news, this article took me a long, long time to enjoy and finish reading. I was reminded of the joy reading a well written bibliography. Especially when there are so many themes I can relate to: the evolution of technologies from late 80s to today, artists v.s. hacker, getting education abroad and dealing with foreign languages.

Have a nice weekend!
